me and my house

in the pre-dawn light
I converse with the house
born in the same year
we compare old lady woes
sagging arches
worn out knees and other joints
we creak and groan
in a harmony one can only know
through a long association
I have worn this house well
owing her upkeep in exchange
for her shelter
does she have fingers that ache
with the onset of winter

honor the house

house creaks
sentient messages
of its beginning

protection
from the elements
the roof endures

warm by the fire
do we forget to thank
the house
